The first half of the fight goes well enough for Drake. But every time the Dragon lands a hit, my father spanks the ass of the girl on his lap. She giggles and then leans in for a kiss, which I have to look away from.
But watching the fight becomes too stressful as well. Drake hasn’t gotten a punch in for a while now. He seems mostly trying to keep as much distance as he can between them. I don’t know much about fighting. Maybe he’s just trying to wear the guy down for a bit by running him in circles around the ring.
“No one beats Drake Fierro,” my dad says. “Except the guy who nearly did it. If Drake loses this fight, I’m gonna be rich.”
The girl on his lap giggles. “Don’t forget to give me some of that money.”
“Of course you can have some, baby. Because your daddy’s sugar baby.”
“Come on!” I shout at my father. “I’m right here.”
“Why don’t you sit closer to your fiancee, Amelia?” My father asks.
Before I can respond that Angelo and I are not engaged, the crowd’s cheers become deafening and I look down to see Drake is lying on the ground struggling to get up. I look over at the computer monitor in front of my father. I’ve been avoiding looking at the screen because I didn’t want to see all the details. I was content watching from a distance until right this moment. Drake’s face is covered in blood. His opponent looks like he’s barely been touched.
“Wait until I tell Drake you bet against him,” I shout at my father over the crowd’s calls for death.
“Fierro is over with after tonight. I finally decided to deal with him. I own half of his gyms, and if he dies I’ll own the whole thing. It’s all part of our agreement. You might say the man did it to himself. He quit fighting before his time and I lost a lot of money because of him.”
I leap up and run towards the stairs. As I get down to the lower level I have to push my way through the crowd. I got shoved and shouted at, but I don’t care. I have to make it to the ring. The Dragon has picked Drake up now and continues to wail on him. I don’t know what Drake was like as a fighter back when he was doing it regularly, but by all accounts it was nothing like this. I can’t believe I’m falling for a man I just met, and now it looks like he’s already being taken away from me.
Tears streak down my cheeks and I was finally get to the edge of the ring and call out for him. “Drake! Please fight back. Please. Don’t let him do this to you.”
“He can’t hear you, girly. He’s already unconscious!”
I get a good look at Drake’s face. But I have to look away. This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.
“Stop hitting him!” I cry out to the Dragon.
